Ayu steps down as PDP national chairman, Damagun takes over

Embattled Peoples Democratic Party leader Iyorchia Ayu has stepped down as national chairman of the party.

At the same time, Ambassador Umar Damagun has been named to replace Ayu in acting capacity, pending the resolution of an ex-parte order delivered by a Benue state high court ordering his removal.

Damagun is the PDP’s national deputy chairman (north). The party has been embroiled in a crisis over the suitability of Ayu as its being national chairman.

Ayu’s opponents insist that he, being from the north as the party’s former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, negates the PDP’s principle of sharing offices among different zones for balancing.
