Authorities detect hard drugs hidden in foodstuff

Anti-narcotics operatives in Nigeria have intercepted hard drugs hidden in foodstuff. An official statement says the couriers intended the drugs for export to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Arrested was a freight agent Ogunsina Damilare, according to officials.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it picked up Damilare at the Lagos airport on Friday, January 6.

The seized drugs, named skunk, weighed 1.5kg. The suspect was trying to process it through the SAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

In a related development, NDLEA discovered 11.5kg of skunk, hideen in a carved wooden sculpture. The illicit substance was originally intended for United Kingdom. The agency says it equally recovered a total of 3,672kg of cannabis sativa from two operations in Kaduna. Five suspects were arrested during the operations.

In yet another incident, the agency said it launched a manhunt for one Cedrick Maduweke for attempting to ship 37.5kilogrammes of cannabis into Nigeria through the Tin Can Port in Lagos. The wanted drug suspect allegedly offered operatives N8million in hush money, but it was rejected. A statement said, “At the Tincan port in Lagos, a shipment of 24.5kg cannabis indica to Nigeria from Montreal, Canada, was intercepted by operatives while an N8m bribe offered NDLEA officers by the importer has been secured in an account for the prosecution of the case.

“While the importer, Cedrick Maduweke, is still at large, one of his accomplices, Steve Adigwe, has been arrested. The consignment was hidden in a used Toyota Sienna vehicle that arrived at the port along with three other cars in a container marked MSMU 5082733.”
