ASUU likely to shun Sultan, other’s pleas to shelve strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, might have shunned pleas from traditional and religious leaders to shelve its planned strike action.

According to a report, the body is prepared to embark on a labour strike, starting Monday. The decision was reportedly taken at a two-day meeting by the lecturer’s body, which ended on Sunday.

Rising from the meeting, ASUU promised to address a press conference on Monday, at 9am, to state its resolutions.

ASUU is accusing the federal government of reneging on previous agreements reached with it, dating to 2009.

ASUU, on November 15, 2021, gave the government a three-week ultimatum to fulfil the demands. The union, however, shelved its planned strike action after government released N22.1billion as earned allowances to lecturers in federal universities.

Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and productivity, recently accused the body of blackmailing the government. The minister and its junior colleague in the education ministry insist government has met lecturers’ demands substantially.
