Police arrest Anambra man attempting to smuggle arms

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a man for conspiring to smuggle arms to the Eastern part of the country.

The suspect, Chimezie Okolie, 44, hails from Ekwusigo in Anambra State. Arrested along with him is one Badong Audu, 48, from Namu Village in Plateau State.

According to the police, both suspects were arrested based on “credible intelligence of an impending arms movement from Jos, through Nasarawa state, to the Eastern part of the country.”

In a statement, signed by its national spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, the police said its special anti-crime unit arrested the two suspects.

“The FIB-IRT Operatives swung into action and apprehended Badong Audu on 26th April, 2022 at Namu Village, with 2 AK47 Rifles and 51 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a bag of beans.

“Investigations led to the arrest of the receiver, Chimezie Okolie, at Nasarawa State, where he was waiting to take delivery of the arms and ammunition,” the statement said.

TheCornet reports that the Nigeria’s southeastern region continues to witness armed insurrection arising from separatist agitation for the carving out of an independent Biafra state.
