Appeal Court upholds Oyebanjo’s election as Ekiti gov.

A three-man Appeal Court panel Thursday upheld the election of Abiodun Oyebanji as the duly elected governor of Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria.

Segun Oni, a former governor and the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the June 18 governorship election, had petitioned the tribunal.

Oni claimed he won the majority of lawful votes and urged the tribunal to declare him the winner of the poll.

But, ruling on the petition, the tribunal declared the case was unmeritorious.

Justice Zaad Zadawa, leading the other justices, said Oni failed to prove there were malpractices in the poll.

He therefore affirmed Oyebanji’s victory.

He held that INEC was in order to have declared him as the winner, having secured the majority votes.
