Please, call off your strike, Buhari begs ASUU
President Muhammadu Buhari has pleaded with striking university lecturers to return to work. The President made the appeal to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
He recalled his directive to senior government officials to resolve the crisis. But, ASUU, which extend its strike by 12 weeks last Monday, said the government had not shown any seriousness over the matter.
ASUU said the universities had remained closed for three months “while members of the political class were busy purchasing expression of interest and nomination forms worth several millions of Naira in preparations for 2023 elections.”
The union had described the federal government’s attitude towards the strike action as “cavalier” and “counter-productive”.
