A-G-O-N-Y: Family of eight including month-old baby burnt to death

A family of eight suffered a most harrowing death following a fire that gutted their home, on Thursday, at the Sabon gari area, Zaria, Kaduna State.

The fire, as reported, began around 2am on Thursday while the family was asleep.

Neighbours said the noise and heat from the inferno woke them up, but they could not save the victims.

A neighbour, Junaidu Mohammed said that no one knew what caused the fire.

“We could not rescue the family alive”, because effort “to get the fire service to the scene was not successful”, he told Daily Trust.

“We didn’t see firefighters until we buried the victims,” Mohammed added.

The victim’s relative, Adamu Mohammed, said that “his late brother, Mallam Rabi’u Mohammed and his wife, Fatima” died in the inferno.

He named the other six casualties as “Rabiatu, Ibrahim, Abubakar, Hauwa’u, Hindatu and Umar. Umar, who was an infant, was just 34 days old, he said.
