50 feared dead in Benue attack but police say casualty toll fewer

An attack by suspected herdsmen on some communities in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State allegedly left 50 persons dead.

But, reacting to the killing, the state police said the casualty toll was fewer.

TheCornet gathered that the affected communities include Adam, Iyarinwa, Abamde Ityuluv, Waya Boagundu, Agura Ayaga and Azege areas in Turan Council Ward, all in Kwande LGA.

Tertsua Yarkbewan, a community leader and former chairman of the affected local government, claimed the invaders mowed 50 natives.

“My people are being massacred like goats,” he said, adding such attacks had spread to safe communities hirthero safe from the rampagers.

Catherine Anene, who speaks for the Benue police command, confirmed the incident but differed on the casualty number.

While saying she had not been properly brief, Anene maintained the death toll “is not up to 50.”
