Abubakar Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has backed the imposition of visa ban by the United States on certain unnamed electoral manipulators.

In a statement, Anthony Blinken, the U.S. secretary of state, said that the affected persons were found to have attempted to undermine ‘a recent Nigerian election’. He also said that similar restriction would apply to anyone who similarly undermines next month’s general election.

Blinken said that the “U.S. is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world,” adding the “visa restrictions” only apply to “specific individuals in Nigeria for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election.”

Weighing in on the issue, Atiku said, “I welcome the United States visa ban on anti-democratic elements whose actions seek to undermine the 2023 elections in Nigeria.”

He added, “I encourage other established democracies to follow suit to ensure that there’s no hiding place for the enemies of our democracy.”
