ASUU: Bank workers to join NLC strike

Bank workers are expected to join the three days warning strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

In a directive issued on Tuesday, the National Union of Banks, Insurance & Financial Institutions Employees directed its members across the federation to join the NLC protest on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

NUBUIFE said, “The leadership of our Union considered the lingering strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities since February 14, 2022 as a national embarrassment inconsiderable of the government.

“However, in line with the doctrine of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Labour Congress held on 30th June. 2022 directing all affiliate members to embark on National Day of Protest to get our children back to school on the scheduled dates below, you are required by this memo to mobilise our members for the very important protest for good governance.”

Organised labour began a strike Tuesday, in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who for the past five months have withdrawn their services.

ASUU is seeking the government to honour an agreement it made with it since 2009. The agreement includes government releasing funds for the revitalisation of universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution; and promotion arrears.

ASUU’s demand is estimated to worth over N1.3trn.

In an Memorandum of Understanding signed with the government, ASUU wants the age of retirement for professors to be scaled up from 65 years to 70 years, and that 15 per cent to 20 per cent of annual national budget should be allocated to education.
