Speeding BRT driver who killed passerby arrested – Police

Benjamin Hudeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, said the driver of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), who knocked down a woman, Reini Akakpo, and her baby in the Dopemu area of the metropolis, has been arrested.

A report has Hudeyin as saying that the accident was not reported to the police though, operatives despite effected the arrest.

“Immediately the police got wind of it, policemen from the Shasha division proceeded to the scene. “The driver was apprehended and detained, while the vehicle was towed away.

“After 24 hours of waiting to see if someone will (sic) come to the station to give useful information on the identity and whereabouts of the woman, the driver was released to a reliable surety but the case has not been concluded.

“But with the new development about the woman’s death, the surety will be contacted to provide the driver so the investigation could be updated accordingly,” he said, according to Punch.

The victim and her daughter were said to be crossing the BRT lane when the speeding bus knocked them down.

She was reportedly rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital(LASUTH) for needed medical attention.

Reini’s husband, identified as Monday, said that medical personnel at the hospital left his wife unattended till she passed away.

He also said he had conveyed the victim’s corpse to Togo for burial.”
